Musikmesse 2012: Cyberstep KDJ-ONE

Okay we saw this at NAMM, but didn’t get a chance to take a really good look at it. I’m not sure whether ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’ is quite apt but I was certainly looking forward to seeing the KDJ-ONE at Musikmesse and I’m not disappointed at all – in fact, I’m quite enamoured with it.

Basically, KDJ-ONE is a portable DAW in a box: synthesis, sampling, sequencing, effects… it’s all there, in a little retro looking almost video game console looking unit. The specs are way more interesting than the styling would suggest, and my early play was really positive. Things are still pretty early on, but it’s already quite easy to use and sounds pretty good. One of the coolest things is the USB MIDI hosting – plug in a keyboard and you can jam away, but if you do want to get back into your home studio on your computer you can load the project in in its on VSTi or AU… all very impressive.

We’ll have more info soon (we’ve been promised a beta unit soon, right Cyberstep?!) but for now take a look at the specs and let us know what you think: is this a nice departure from yet another iPad app?
