Beat Thang

Beat Kangz Release Beat Thang

You may recognise Beat Thang – it’s been in the making for a while and a software version of it has been available for some time. Finally being released, exclusive to Best Buy (we’re not sure whether that’s an entirely good omen), Beat Thang is an entirely portable studio in a box groove machine.

The design of the Beat Thang is… well, it certainly stands out

The design of the Beat Thang is… well, it certainly stands out, for better or worse. There are some bizarre ergonomic decisions, such as the pitch bend and mod wheels on opposite sides of the unit (and we actually mean sides) and a conspicuous lack of tech specs available; at $1499 we’re not sure how much of a bargain it’ll be. Funnily enough in many ways it reminds us of the Yamaha DJX – if you don’t remember it look it up, it was fun but it was definitely a toy. That said, the video below does show that the unit has potential… Unfortunately we won’t be digging in to the Beat Thang to confirm or deny our suspicions, as review units aren’t being sent out. They’re available from Sunday the 17th, though, so if you live in the USA maybe they’ll have some instore demos…

This looks like a joke. I mean, for the price you’d be better off buying a used MPC or SP-202 or -303. Hell, you could buy an old Ensoniq keyboard that runs on floppy disks for $150 and get more sounds and more overall use than you could from this overblown toy. The lack of review units bothers me given the hard sell on sounds and performance – even if the standalone program version was well received for “futuristic sounds” (which sounds like shitty overcompressed drum samples to me).

I guess you HAVENT seen the tech specs….. lol
I just got one and im in no hurry to tell any of you what this thang can do…..
Lets just say im very happy and its far from a toy….. makes my mpc look like a toy..
I hope it flys under the radar for a min and people joke on it so i get a head start before everyone finds out what it actually is……. I wanna support them but im not gonna promote it as right now its my secret weapon….. LOL you have no idea.

When tech specs for a technical product aren’t released, with the company instead focusing on spurious endorsements and astro turfing praise online, we tend to get suspicious. We have done our research and the fact that demo units are not being sent out to music publications (we were briefly offered a sales person controlled demonstration of the unit, which went cold) and there is no press on the performance of the unit, rather recycled press release material posted on news aggregator blogs, leads us to assume that there’s something the Beat Kangz are trying to keep hidden so that they can sell as many units on the back of endorsements as possible. It does look like there’s some promise with the unit – cost wise we’re concerned, however – it’s just a shame that the organisation’s lacking in etiquette (fake comments are in rather bad taste) and faith in the strength of their product. We always post first hand information and opinions at Oh Drat, and thus you can trust what you read here.
