Mike-L – On a Columbo Tip

Veteran turntablist and producer Mike-L’s new album On a Columbo Tip throws thunderous drums, eclectic samples, and some seriously dextrous scratching skills into the ring and sees them scrap it out – before they promptly decide to make love not war instead and combine into a sweet, sweet serenade.

It’s classy, and never pastiche, and the fact that the source material for the entire LP is exclusively original vinyl lends authenticity to the character of the record.

Part sequenced, part scratched, but never sounding forced, On a Columbo Tip also manages to sidestep the ‘wallpaper music’ blight that affects a sizeable crop of sample based (and especially fusion sampling) instrumental hip hop, whilst confidently eschewing the LA-via-Detroit ‘beat scene’ style.

It’s even available on a limited vinyl run, completing the cycle, so to speak. Get it, or a CD, or a digital download, from Mike-L’s Bandcamp page

I’d not heard Mike-L’s name for years.
I wonder if it’s the same chap I saw at one of the many DMC regionals at the Medicine Bar, doing a juggle with Creams – Sunshine of your love? I’m clicking on ‘BUY’ now. Thanks for the recommendation Chris.

It could very well be! I’ll see if I can get the man himself to confirm or deny…
